Liverpool make excellent Ward promotion call to succeed Edwards

Alex McLeish “loves” the promotion of Julian Ward as successor to Michael Edwards at Liverpool.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football initiate, admitted that he “enjoys” seeing people go through the “system” both on and off the pitch.

Liverpool have announced that Ward, who is currently deputy sporting director, will take on the lead role when Edwards steps down at the end of the season.

In his open letter to fans, Edwards praised his colleague’s impact since joining the club.

The Reds chief insisted that Ward was the “ideal” replacement.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo (October 2020), Jurgen Klopp praised Ward for his “incredible job” as Loans and Tracks Officer.

The 40-year-old took on the role of assistant sporting director last year.

McLeish applauded the Reds’ decision to nominate from the inside and compared him to a young player coming from the academy.

McLeish said Football initiate Associate Editor Russell Edge: “I love it, promotion. I like the idea of promoting a young person or a person who has trained with people like Michael Edwards.

“It’s the same in football, we all love to see young players succeed.

“You feel proud when they go through.

“Being able to promote one of your guys through the system proves your system is working.”

Ward previously worked at North West rivals Manchester City before joining the Anfield recruiting squad in 2012.

Prior to working directly under Edwards, he was director of loan management at Liverpool.

He created the loans department at Anfield in 2015.
